Topic 01
Booking and pricing
How to book, what a visit costs and how our fixed written quotes work.
How do I book an electrician?
Call 07 5550 1420, book online or send photos of the job through our quote form. We confirm a two-hour arrival window, text you when the electrician is on the way and arrive in a marked Volt One van. Most standard jobs can be booked within the same week.
How much is your call-out fee?
Our call-out is $99. It covers travel anywhere on the Gold Coast, diagnosis and the first 30 minutes on site, and many small repairs are finished inside that time. If you approve quoted work on the same visit, the call-out is included in the quote. Our pricing page lists full starting prices.
Do you give fixed-price quotes?
Yes. After an inspection, or from clear photos for simple work, we give you a written quote with the scope, parts and total including GST. Nothing starts until you approve it, and if something hidden turns up we quote the change before continuing.
Can you give me a price over the phone?
For common jobs like downlights, smoke alarms or an EV charger on a modern board, we can usually give you a firm price from a few photos. Older homes and fault finding need eyes on site first, so we start with the call-out.
Which payment methods do you accept?
Card, bank transfer and Apple Pay, payable on completion. Larger projects such as rewires and three-phase upgrades are invoiced in stages that we agree in the quote.
Topic 02
Electrical safety
When to worry, what to switch off and which problems need a licensed electrician straight away.
Why does my safety switch keep tripping?
A safety switch trips when it detects current leaking to earth, usually from a faulty appliance, water in an outdoor fitting or damaged cabling. Unplug everything on the circuit and reset it. If it trips again with nothing plugged in, the fault is in the wiring and needs an electrician.
Is a burning smell from a power point an emergency?
Yes. A burning or fishy smell, scorch marks or a warm faceplate means a connection is overheating. Switch off at the main if it is safe, stop using the outlet and call our 24/7 emergency line.
How many safety switches does my home need?
New circuits must be protected by safety switches, and rental homes must have them on power circuits. We recommend protecting every circuit in the home. Many older boards have one safety switch covering the power points only, or none at all.
Can I do my own electrical work in Queensland?
No. In Queensland only a licensed electrician can do electrical work, including replacing a power point or light switch. Unlicensed work is a serious safety risk and can affect your home insurance.
How often should my home have an electrical safety check?
We suggest every five years, when you buy or sell, before a renovation and after any storm damage. Older homes with original wiring benefit from a check sooner.
Topic 03
Switchboards
Upgrades, timing, Energex and what happens to your power on the day.
How do I know if my switchboard needs upgrading?
Ceramic fuses, rewireable fuse wire, no safety switches, a board that trips when the oven and air conditioner run together, or scorch marks and buzzing are all signs. Adding an EV charger, solar or induction cooking often needs more capacity too.
How much does a switchboard upgrade cost?
Most single-phase Gold Coast homes land between $1,490 and $2,400. A board and meter box replacement starts around $2,400, and three-phase upgrades from $3,500. You get a fixed written price before any work starts.
How long will my power be off?
Usually four to six hours for a standard single-phase upgrade. We agree the time with you in advance and keep the fridge and freezer off for as short a time as possible.
Will Energex need to attend?
Sometimes. If the supply needs disconnecting or the meter is being moved or replaced, we book Energex for you and coordinate the day. Many standard upgrades do not need a separate visit.
Do I need a new switchboard for an EV charger or solar?
Not always. If your board has spare capacity and safety switches, a charger or inverter can often connect to it. We check the board, the main switch rating and your supply before we quote.
Topic 04
Smoke alarms
Queensland smoke alarm laws, the 2027 deadline and what a compliant alarm looks like.
What are the Queensland smoke alarm laws for 2027?
From 1 January 2027, every Queensland home must have interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms in every bedroom, in hallways that connect bedrooms to the rest of the home, and on every level. Rental properties and homes being sold already have to comply.
Do my smoke alarms need to be hardwired?
Not always. Compliant alarms can be hardwired or powered by a 10-year sealed lithium battery, as long as they are photoelectric and interconnected. Hardwired alarms suit renovations, while wireless interconnected alarms are quicker to fit in finished homes.
How much does a smoke alarm upgrade cost?
Our photoelectric interconnected alarms start at $149 per alarm, supplied and installed. A typical three-bedroom, single-level home needs four to five alarms. We confirm the count and give you a fixed price on site.
How often should smoke alarms be replaced?
Every 10 years from the date of manufacture, which is printed on the back, or sooner if an alarm fails a test. Test them monthly and vacuum the vents every six months.
Can I install the alarms myself?
Battery-powered interconnected alarms can be fitted by a homeowner, but hardwired alarms must be installed by a licensed electrician. We also issue a compliance certificate, which helps when you sell or lease.
Topic 05
EV chargers and solar
EV chargers, three-phase supply, solar and battery readiness.
How much does an EV charger installation cost?
A 7 kW wall charger, supplied and installed on a standard cable run, starts at $1,290. Longer runs, a switchboard upgrade or three-phase supply add to the price, and we confirm everything in a fixed written quote.
Do I need three-phase power for an EV charger?
No. A single-phase 7 kW charger adds roughly 40 to 50 kilometres of range per hour, which suits most households. Three-phase only makes sense for 22 kW charging or if your home already has three-phase supply.
Can my charger run off my solar panels?
Yes. Many smart chargers can be set to use surplus solar first. We set up the charger and your inverter so the car charges in the middle of the day, when your panels produce the most.
Do you install solar panels and batteries?
We handle the electrical side, such as switchboard upgrades, battery readiness and dedicated circuits, and work with accredited solar installers for the panels and batteries.
Does Energex need to approve my EV charger?
Most home chargers do not need a separate application, but larger or three-phase chargers may need network approval. We check what applies to your property and lodge any paperwork for you.
Topic 06
Rentals and landlords
Compliance checks and fast repairs for landlords and property managers.
What electrical checks do Queensland rentals need?
Rental homes must have safety switches on power circuits and compliant smoke alarms, and the alarms must be tested and cleaned within 30 days before each new tenancy or renewal. We test both, fix anything that fails and send a report for your records.
Can you work directly with my property manager?
Yes. We take work orders from property managers, contact tenants to arrange access, send before and after photos, and invoice the agency or the owner, whichever you prefer.
Who pays for electrical repairs in a rental?
Landlords are generally responsible for keeping electrical fittings safe and working, unless the tenant caused the damage. We note the cause of each fault on the invoice so the right party is billed.
How quickly can you attend a tenant's urgent repair?
Urgent repairs, such as no power or a dangerous fitting, are usually attended the same day, and our emergency line covers nights and weekends. Routine work is booked in with the tenant within the week.
Do you offer compliance packages for multiple properties?
Yes. Agencies and investors with several properties can book scheduled smoke alarm and safety switch checks at a set price per property, with reports sent to one inbox.
Topic 07
Commercial electrical
Fit-outs, maintenance, test and tag and emergency lighting for Gold Coast businesses.
Do you work outside business hours?
Yes. We schedule fit-outs, upgrades and testing at night or on weekends so your business keeps trading. Our 24/7 emergency line also covers commercial clients.
How often does test and tag need to be done?
It depends on the environment and your safety plan. Construction sites need testing every three months, and workshops more often than offices. We recommend an interval, keep a register and remind you when the next round is due.
Do you test emergency and exit lighting?
Yes. We carry out six-monthly emergency and exit light testing to AS/NZS 2293, replace failed batteries and fittings, and keep the logbook up to date for your fire safety inspections.
Can you handle a full office or retail fit-out?
Yes. We work from your plans or alongside your builder, covering power, data, lighting and switchboards, with certification at handover. Larger projects are quoted per site after a walk-through.
Do you offer maintenance contracts?
Yes. Scheduled visits cover testing, lighting, minor repairs and thermal imaging of switchboards, with priority call-outs for contract clients. We tailor the schedule to your site.
