Whole-of-home surge protection on the Gold Coast
Gold Coast storm season brings lightning that can send a voltage spike through the network and into every appliance in your home. A surge protection device at the switchboard diverts most of that energy to earth before it reaches your TV, air conditioner, solar inverter or EV charger. We fit it in under an hour.

When surge protection is worth it
Surge protection is cheap insurance for homes with expensive electronics. It is especially worth fitting in these situations.
What's included in surge protection
We size the protection to your supply and add it where it does the most good.
Switchboard surge diverter
A Type 2 surge protection device fitted at the main board, protecting every circuit it feeds.
Correct earthing check
Surge protection only works with a sound earth, so we test the main earth and bonding as part of the job.
Sub-boards and outbuildings
Additional protection at granny flats, sheds and pool equipment boards fed from the main switchboard.
Point-of-use advice
Advice on surge-protected powerboards for sensitive electronics and modems that also connect to phone or data lines.
How much does surge protection cost on the Gold Coast?
A whole-of-home surge diverter fitted at an existing switchboard starts from $390. It costs less when fitted as part of a switchboard upgrade, because the board is already open and the space is planned in. Three-phase homes and properties with sub-boards need more than one device. You get a fixed written price first.

What clients say about our surge protection work
“Wish we had done it before the last storm.”
Lost a TV and the gate motor to a lightning strike. Volt One fitted surge protection on the main board and the pool board the same week.

“Fitted while the new board went in.”
Added surge protection during our switchboard upgrade for less than half the cost of doing it later. Clear explanation of what it does and does not cover.

“Quick, tidy and properly explained.”
Under an hour on site. They tested our earth, fitted the diverter and showed us the indicator to check after storms.

FAQs
Surge protection questions
What homeowners ask us about storms and surges.
What does a surge protection device do?
It sits at your switchboard and diverts voltage spikes to earth before they reach the circuits in your home. It protects against surges from lightning on the network and switching events, which are common in storm season.
Will it protect against a direct lightning strike?
No device can guarantee that. A switchboard surge diverter handles the far more common surges that travel along the supply. A direct strike on the house needs a dedicated lightning protection system.
Do I still need surge-protected powerboards?
For sensitive electronics, yes. The switchboard device takes most of the energy, and a good powerboard at the TV or computer adds a second layer. Modems also need protection on the phone or data line.
How long does a surge diverter last?
It can absorb many small surges over its life, but a large one can use it up. Most have an indicator that changes colour when the device needs replacing. Check it after a big storm.
Can it be added to my existing switchboard?
Usually, if the board has a spare space and is in good condition. On older boards it is often better fitted as part of a switchboard upgrade.
Does surge protection matter if I have solar?
Yes. Solar inverters, batteries and EV chargers are some of the most expensive electronics in the home and are all connected to the switchboard.
