Standards and compliance

Repairs are carried out by A-grade licensed electricians to AS/NZS 3000 (the Wiring Rules). Queensland's Electrical Safety Office advises that electrical equipment and wiring affected by water must be checked by a licensed electrician before power is restored, and we test every water-affected circuit before it is livened. Damage to the network side of the meter is Energex's responsibility, and we coordinate with them where needed.

“Answered at 11pm and here in 40 minutes.”

Our power went out in a storm and the board was buzzing. The electrician talked us through switching off, arrived quickly and had the lights back on before midnight.

Half the house lost power in a storm. The person on the phone was an electrician, talked us through what was safe and was at the door within the hour.

“The report made the insurance claim easy.”

Water came through the ceiling into the downlights. They made it safe that night, fixed it the next day and the report had everything the assessor asked for.

FAQs

Storm damage questions

What to do, and what not to do, after a storm.

What should I do if powerlines are down?

Stay at least 8 metres away, keep everyone else away and call Energex on 13 19 62. Never touch a fallen line or anything it is touching. We cannot work on network lines, but we can repair your property once Energex has made it safe.

My power is out after a storm. Is it Energex or my home?

If your neighbours are also out, it is likely a network outage and Energex will restore it. If only your home is out, or a safety switch will not reset, call us.

Is it safe to turn the power back on after water gets in?

Not until a licensed electrician has checked it. Water-affected wiring, switchboards and appliances can be dangerous even after they dry out.

Will my insurance cover storm damage?

Many home policies cover storm, flood or lightning damage to wiring and appliances, depending on the policy. Our written report gives your insurer the cause, the damage and the repair cost.

Can lightning damage appliances without hitting the house?

Yes. A strike nearby can send a surge through the supply, phone or data lines. A surge protection device at the switchboard reduces that risk.

How quickly can you get here?

Typically within 60 minutes, depending on your region and how widespread the storm is. On big storm nights we prioritise homes without power or with a safety hazard.
