EV charger installation on the Gold Coast

A home wall charger adds around 40 to 50 km of range for every hour on a 7 kW circuit, compared with a few kilometres an hour from a standard power point. We check your switchboard and supply first, then install Tesla, Zappi and Wallbox chargers on a dedicated, properly protected circuit, set up the app and show you how to charge off-peak or from your solar.

Before you install an EV charger

Most homes can take a 7 kW charger without major work. These are the things we check first, because they decide the price and the charger that suits you.

Whether your switchboard has space and capacity for a dedicated EV circuit
Whether your supply is single-phase or three-phase, and its rating at the main switch
The cable run from the switchboard to the garage, carport or driveway
Whether you have solar and want the charger to use surplus generation first
How many kilometres you drive in a typical day and when the car is home
For units and townhouses, body corporate approval and where the circuit can come from

What's included in an EV charger install

Every install is sized to your supply and your car, not just the biggest charger available.

Charger supply or install only

Tesla Wall Connector, Zappi and Wallbox chargers supplied, or we install the charger you already have.

Dedicated circuit and protection

A new circuit from the switchboard with a correctly rated breaker and the RCD protection the charger requires.

Load and solar settings

Load management so the charger does not overload your supply, and solar-aware settings where the charger supports it.

App setup and handover

We connect the charger to your Wi-Fi, set your charging schedule and leave you with the certificate.

How much does an EV charger cost to install on the Gold Coast?

A 7 kW charger supplied and installed with a standard cable run starts from $1,290, or $690 to install a charger you already own. Long cable runs, outdoor mounting, trenching to a detached carport or a switchboard that needs upgrading first all add to the price. If your board needs work, we quote both together so there are no surprises.

Our EV charger installation process

01

Check your supply

From photos of your switchboard and garage, or a short visit, we confirm the circuit and charger that suit you.

02

Fixed written quote

You get one price for the charger, circuit, protection and any board work it needs.

03

Install and test

Most installs take three to four hours, with power off for less than an hour while we connect the circuit.

04

Set up and hand over

We set up the app and schedule, run a test charge with your car and issue your certificate.

Standards and compliance

EV chargers are installed by A-grade licensed electricians to AS/NZS 3000 (the Wiring Rules), with cable sized to AS/NZS 3008 and RCD protection suited to EV charging (either built into the charger or fitted at the board). We follow the charger manufacturer's installation requirements so your product warranty stays intact, and check whether Energex needs to be notified for your supply. You receive a Certificate of Testing and Safety.

“Charger in, board checked and the car charging that afternoon.”

Josh sized the charger to our supply, ran a neat dedicated circuit through the garage and showed us how to schedule charging off-peak. The price on the quote was the price on the invoice.

“The EV charger install was spotless.”

They mounted a 7 kW charger in the garage, ran the cable neatly through the ceiling and set up the app with us before leaving. Charging overnight ever since.

“Charges from the solar first, exactly as promised.”

Zappi on the carport wall, set to soak up our surplus solar during the day. Clear advice on what our single-phase supply could handle.

FAQs

EV charger questions

What drivers ask us before installing a home charger.

How much does it cost to install an EV charger?

From $1,290 for a 7 kW charger supplied and installed with a standard cable run, or from $690 to install a charger you already have. We give you a fixed price after checking your switchboard and the cable route.

Do I need three-phase power for an EV charger?

No. A 7 kW single-phase charger suits most drivers and refills a typical daily commute in a couple of hours overnight. Three-phase lets you charge faster, but many cars accept a maximum of 11 kW on AC charging, so check your car before upgrading.

Will I need a switchboard upgrade?

Not always. Many modern boards have room for a dedicated EV circuit. Older boards with ceramic fuses, or homes on a small supply, usually need an upgrade first. We check this as part of the quote.

Can I just use a standard power point?

You can charge slowly from a standard 10 amp outlet with the cable that came with the car, but it adds only a few kilometres of range per hour and runs the outlet at full load for many hours. A wall charger on its own circuit is faster and safer for daily use.

Can the charger run from my solar?

Yes. Chargers such as the Zappi can follow your solar output and charge the car from surplus generation, and most chargers can be scheduled for cheaper off-peak times.

Can I install a charger in a unit or townhouse?

Usually, with body corporate approval. We check where the circuit can come from, whether the building needs load management, and give the committee a clear scope to approve.
