7 kW charger and dedicated circuit for a new estate home

A new home in an Upper Coomera estate, a first electric car arriving in a fortnight and a garage with nothing but a standard power point. We installed a 7 kW wall charger on its own circuit, set it to soak up the solar during the day and finished in under five hours.

The brief

The owners moved into this two-year-old home in one of the newer Upper Coomera estates and ordered their first electric car soon after. The dealer suggested charging from a standard power point with the portable cable, which adds only about 10 to 15 kilometres of range an hour and ties up a 10A outlet for most of the night.

They wanted a proper wall charger in the double garage that could fill the car overnight, use their 6.6 kW solar system when the car was home during the day, and leave room on the switchboard for a battery later. They also wanted it tidy, with no cable running across the garage wall.

What we did

Josh Tane visited first to check the supply and the switchboard. The house has a single-phase 63A supply, so before adding a 32A continuous load he worked out the maximum demand of the house with the ducted air conditioning, oven and pool pump all running. The numbers worked, with a load management clamp as a safety margin.

Installed a 7 kW single-phase wall charger with built-in DC fault detection
Ran a dedicated 6mm² circuit 11 metres through the garage ceiling, fully concealed
Protected the circuit with its own Type A RCBO on the existing board
Fitted a current clamp on the main supply so the charger backs off under heavy load
Set up solar mode so the car charges from excess generation first
Commissioned the app, set an off-peak schedule and walked the owners through it

We mounted the charger on the side wall nearest the charge port so the cable reaches without stretching, with a holster for the plug. The circuit drops from the ceiling inside a short length of painted conduit, so the only thing visible on the wall is the charger itself.

Left: the first charge on the new 7 kW circuit. Right: the dedicated RCBO added to the existing board.

The result

The car now goes from 20% to 80% overnight in about six hours, and on weekends it charges mostly from the roof. In the first month the owners worked out that more than half their charging came from their own solar, which they had previously been exporting for a few cents a unit.

The load clamp has quietly done its job too: on a hot evening with the air conditioning on, the charger turns itself down instead of tripping the main switch. There is still space on the board for a battery, so that upgrade will not need a new switchboard.

What the owners said

“Josh did the maths on our power supply before anything else, which gave us real confidence. The install is so neat you would think the builder put it in.”
