Pool, garden and facade lighting on one smart controller

A Sanctuary Cove home with a resort-style pool, a landscaped garden and a facade that disappeared after dark, all run from five separate switches and timers. We relit the pool, garden and facade with low-voltage LEDs and put the whole lot on one smart controller.

The brief

The owners of this two-storey home inside the Sanctuary Cove estate had finished a landscaping project and wanted the outdoor lighting to match it. The existing setup was a mix of old halogen pool lights, a few spike lights that had stopped working and a single floodlight on the garage. Each area had its own switch or plug-in timer, and nobody could remember which was which.

The brief was warm, low-glare lighting for the pool, the garden beds and palms, and the front facade, all controlled from one app with sunset timing. The work also had to meet the estate's architectural guidelines for external lighting, which limit glare and light spill onto neighbouring lots and the waterways.

What we did

We drew up a lighting plan with the owners and their landscaper, marking every fitting position, beam angle and cable route, and submitted it to the estate for approval before starting. Pool lighting has strict rules under the wiring standard, so the pool lights run at extra-low voltage from isolated transformers mounted well outside the pool zones.

Replaced 4 halogen pool lights with 12V colour-selectable LED pool lights
Installed 18 low-voltage garden uplights and spike lights on the palms and beds
Added 8 shielded wall washers to light the facade without upward spill
Fitted 4 step lights along the path to the jetty
Ran 3 new outdoor circuits on RCBOs, with cabling in conduit at the required depth
Put all 4 zones on one smart controller with sunset timing and app scenes

All garden cabling went in while the landscaper had the beds open, so nothing had to be dug up later. Every transformer sits in a ventilated, weatherproof enclosure near the pool equipment, and the pool lights connect through new junction boxes above water level. We checked the pool's equipotential bonding was intact before handing over.

Left: the pool and garden on the evening scene. Right: the facade lit with shielded wall washers.

The result

The garden, pool and facade now come on together at sunset and switch to a low path-lighting scene at 11pm, then off at 1am. The owners can change the pool colour or turn everything on for guests from their phones, and there are no more plug-in timers in the garage.

The 34 LED fittings draw about 300W in total, less than the old halogen pool lights alone used. The estate approved the plan without changes, and the neighbours across the water told the owners the house looks better at night without the old floodlight in their eyes.

What the owners said

“We spend every evening outside now. One app runs the lot, and the pool looks like a resort without lighting up the whole canal.”
