Kitchen relight with pendants and dimmable downlights

A full kitchen renovation in a Robina family home, with the old fluorescent batten coming out and an island bench going in. We worked around the builder's program, roughed in before the plasterer and came back for fit-off, with pendants, dimmable downlights and under-cabinet lighting.

The brief

The owners of this 1990s two-storey home near Robina Town Centre were taking their kitchen back to the frame: new cabinets, a stone island, a new ceiling and a much bigger opening to the family room. The old kitchen was lit by one fluorescent batten and a single downlight over the sink, and the power points were in all the wrong places for the new layout.

They wanted pendants over the island, even light over the benches with no shadows from the overhead cupboards, and lighting that could go from bright for cooking to soft in the evening. Their builder needed an electrician who could fit around the cabinet maker and plasterer without holding anyone up.

What we did

We met the owners and the builder on site with the cabinet drawings, marked every light, switch and power point on the frame and agreed the dates for rough-in and fit-off. Because the new layout added an induction cooktop and a wall oven, we checked the switchboard and made sure it had the capacity for two new dedicated circuits before any cable was run.

Roughed in 3 pendant points over the island, centred on the stone, before the plasterer
Installed 12 dimmable, IC-4 rated 3000K LED downlights on two switched zones
Fitted 24V LED strip under the overhead cabinets, with the drivers hidden in the kickboards
Ran dedicated circuits for the induction cooktop and the wall oven
Added 7 double power points, including 2 with USB-C, and a pop-up outlet in the island
Fitted trailing-edge dimmers and tested and certified every circuit

Rough-in took one day, before the plasterboard went up, and fit-off took one more after the cabinets and stone were installed. We worked from the cabinet maker's final drawings, so the strip lighting lined up with the cabinet edges and the island outlet sat clear of the overhang without any recutting.

Left: the finished island with pendants on their own dimmer. Right: testing the new kitchen circuits at the board.

The result

The kitchen now has three layers of light: pendants over the island, downlights over the walkways and strip lighting along the benches, each on its own switch or dimmer. The 12 downlights and strip lighting together use less power than the old fluorescent batten, while lighting a room twice the size.

The builder kept to the program, and the owners had their kitchen back a week earlier than planned because no part of the electrical work had to wait on another trade. They have since asked us to quote a matching relight for the family room.

What the owners said

“Our builder said it was the easiest electrical rough-in he'd had all year. The lighting is exactly what we wanted, bright for cooking and lovely at night.”
