Key takeaways

Our call-out is $99 and includes travel, diagnosis and the first 30 minutes
Planned work is priced as a fixed job, agreed in writing before we start
After-hours call-outs start from $189, and from $249 on public holidays
Compare the line items, not just the total: safety switches, testing and certification all matter

Ask five electricians what a job costs and you can get five very different numbers. Some quote an hourly rate, some a fixed price, and some leave out parts of the job that turn up later on the invoice. This guide explains how pricing usually works, gives our starting prices for common Gold Coast jobs and shows you how to compare quotes fairly.

How electricians charge

There are two common models. Hourly pricing charges a call-out fee plus time and materials. It is simple, but you do not know the total until the job is done. Fixed pricing quotes the whole job up front. It takes a little more work before the visit, but you know exactly what you will pay.

We use fixed prices. For faults and small repairs, our $99 call-out covers travel anywhere on the Gold Coast, diagnosis and the first 30 minutes of work. Plenty of small jobs, like a faulty power point or a tripping safety switch, are finished inside that time. For planned work, you get a written quote listing the scope, the parts and the total including GST, and nothing starts until you approve it.

After-hours and emergency rates

Emergencies do not keep business hours, and after-hours work costs more because an electrician is on call through the night, on weekends and on public holidays. We quote the rate on the phone before we leave. Our 24/7 emergency electrician page explains what counts as an emergency.

What affects the price of a job

Two jobs with the same name can take very different amounts of time. These are the factors we check on site before we give you a number:

Age and condition of the existing wiring and switchboard
Access: roof space height, slab floors and double-storey walls
Number of circuits, lights or power points in the job
Single-phase or three-phase supply, and the state of the meter box
Energex involvement, such as a disconnection or meter change
Cable run length from the switchboard to the new work

How to keep your quote down

Send clear photos of the switchboard and the work area. Group small jobs into one visit so you only pay one call-out. Clear access to the roof space and the switchboard before we arrive. And book planned work during business hours, before it turns into an emergency.

How to compare quotes fairly

The cheapest quote is not always the cheapest job. Before you choose, check that each quote includes:

The electrical contractor licence number, which you can check with the Electrical Safety Office. Ours is 00000
Safety switches wherever the work needs them
Testing and a Certificate of Testing and Safety for the work
Any Energex booking or meter work
Removal of old fittings and a clean-up
A written warranty. We give 12 months on workmanship, and manufacturer warranties pass through on products

When to call a licensed electrician

Call a licensed electrician for any work on fixed wiring, power points, lights or the switchboard. In Queensland it is illegal for anyone else to do it, and unlicensed work can cause problems with an insurance claim. Call straight away if you smell burning, see sparks or get a shock from anything in the house.

Pricing FAQ

Do you charge for quotes?

Quotes for planned work are free. For faults and repairs, the $99 call-out covers travel, diagnosis and the first 30 minutes. If you go ahead with quoted work on the same visit, the call-out is included in the quote.

Are your prices fixed or hourly?

Fixed. Once we have seen the job, or clear photos of it, we give you a written price for the whole scope. If something hidden turns up, we stop and quote the change before we continue.

Do your prices include GST?

Yes. Every price in this guide and every written quote includes GST, standard materials, testing and a Certificate of Testing and Safety.

How do I pay?

Card, bank transfer or Apple Pay on completion. Larger projects such as rewires and three-phase upgrades are invoiced in stages, agreed in the quote.

Why do some electricians quote lower?

Some quotes leave out safety switches, testing, certification or the Energex booking, then add them later. Compare the line items as well as the total.
