Signs you need more power points

Most homes were wired for far fewer appliances than we use today. If any of these sound familiar, extra outlets or a new circuit will make the house safer and easier to live in.

Powerboards and double adaptors running permanently behind the TV, desk or bed
Extension leads run across floors or out the back door to the patio
A power point that is loose, cracked, scorched or warm to touch
Two-pin outlets or power points that are not on an RCD safety switch
A new oven, cooktop, air conditioner or pool pump that needs its own circuit
A home office, garage or kitchen island with no power where you need it

Power point work we install

We find the right circuit for each new outlet, check it can take the extra load and test everything before we leave.

“Outdoor power for the patio, done in a morning.”

Two weatherproof double outlets on the patio and a new circuit for the pool pump. Neat conduit runs and a clear explanation of what they had done.

FAQs

Power point questions

What we get asked most before adding outlets.

How much does it cost to add a power point?

From $165 for a new double power point on an existing circuit in a single-storey home. USB-C outlets start from $185 and outdoor weatherproof outlets from $220. Long cable runs, brick walls and two-storey access add to the price.

Can I just swap my power points for USB ones?

Yes. Swapping an existing outlet for a USB-C model is a quick job and uses the same cut-out in most walls. We check the circuit is in good condition and RCD protected while we are there.

Do new power points need a safety switch?

Yes. Under AS/NZS 3000, new and altered circuits must be protected by an RCD. If the circuit you are adding to has no safety switch, we quote one with the job.

Can you add a power point to a brick wall?

Yes. We either chase the cable into the wall and patch it, or run it in neat surface conduit if you prefer no patching. We talk you through both options before we start.

Is it safe to use powerboards permanently?

Powerboards with overload protection are fine for low-power devices like TVs and chargers. Heaters, kettles and air fryers should plug straight into a wall outlet. If you rely on powerboards everywhere, more outlets are the safer fix.

Do I need a separate circuit for my oven or air conditioner?

Most ovens, induction cooktops and larger air conditioners need a dedicated circuit from the switchboard, sized to the appliance. We check the manufacturer requirements and your board capacity as part of the quote.
