Energy-efficient electrical upgrades on the Gold Coast

The quickest way to cut a power bill is usually not a new appliance. It is replacing halogen lighting with LED, putting the pool pump and hot water on the right timer or tariff, and running the big loads while your solar is generating. We find where your power goes and fix the expensive parts first.

Signs your home is wasting power

Most Gold Coast homes we visit have at least two of these. Each one is a simple fix.

Halogen downlights still in the kitchen, living areas or outside
A pool pump that runs all day on a mechanical timer set years ago
Electric hot water on the general tariff instead of a controlled load
Outdoor lights left on all night because there is no sensor or timer
Solar exporting most of the day while big loads run at night
No idea which appliances use the most power

Upgrades that cut running costs

We prioritise the upgrades that pay for themselves fastest in your home.

LED lighting retrofits

Halogen downlights and old fluorescent fittings replaced with IC-4 rated LED that uses up to 85% less power.

Timers and sensors

Digital timers on pool pumps and heaters, plus motion and daylight sensors on outdoor and garage lighting.

Hot water on a controlled load

Electric or heat pump hot water connected to an Energex controlled load tariff where your retailer offers one.

Monitoring and solar matching

Energy monitoring and relays so pumps, hot water and EV charging run while your solar is generating.

How much do energy-efficient upgrades cost on the Gold Coast?

Most homes start with lighting. Replacing 20 halogen downlights with LED costs from $1,380 and is usually paid back in power savings within three to four years when the lights are used every evening. Timers and sensors are smaller jobs that pay back faster. Moving hot water to a controlled load may need a meter change arranged through your retailer. You get a fixed written quote first.

What clients say about our energy upgrades

Read all reviews

“Every room relit and not a mark on the ceilings.”

They swapped our old halogens for dimmable LED downlights, added garden lighting along the canal and patched every hole. The power bill dropped the next quarter.

Daniel R.

Hope Island · LED lighting upgrade

“The pool pump was costing us a fortune.”

They found it running 12 hours a day on an old timer. New digital timer set to solar hours and the next bill was noticeably lower.

Craig M.

Burleigh Waters · Energy-efficient upgrade

“Practical advice, nothing we did not need.”

Ranked the upgrades by payback and started with the lights and the outdoor sensors. Clear prices and tidy work.

FAQs

Energy upgrade questions

What homeowners ask us about cutting power costs.

How much can LED lighting save?

An LED downlight uses around 8 to 10 watts compared with about 50 watts for a halogen downlight with its transformer. Across 20 to 30 lights used every evening, that adds up quickly.

What is a controlled load tariff?

Energex offers controlled load tariffs for appliances such as hot water and pool pumps. Tariff 31 supplies power for at least 8 hours a day and Tariff 33 for at least 18 hours a day, both at a lower rate. Your retailer sets the price and arranges any meter change.

Is it better to run things during the day if I have solar?

Usually, yes. Running the pool pump, hot water and EV charging while your panels are generating uses power you would otherwise export for a small feed-in credit.

Should I replace my old electric hot water system?

If it is near the end of its life, a heat pump uses far less power for the same hot water. We wire heat pumps and can connect them to a timer or controlled load.

Do you sell or recommend appliances?

We focus on the electrical side: lighting, timers, sensors, circuits and monitoring. We are happy to give an honest view on what suits your home.

Can I do this in stages?

Yes. Most clients start with lighting and timers and add monitoring or solar matching later. We plan the first stage with the rest in mind.
