Three-phase power upgrades on the Gold Coast

Three-phase supply splits your home's load across three active conductors instead of one, which gives you room for fast EV charging, large ducted air conditioning, bigger solar systems and workshop machinery. We handle the whole upgrade, from the Energex application to the new consumer mains, switchboard and meter coordination.

When a three-phase upgrade makes sense

Three-phase is not needed in most homes. It is worth considering when one or more of these apply.

You want to charge an EV faster than a single-phase supply allows
You are installing large ducted air conditioning or a pool heat pump
You want a solar system larger than Energex allows on a single-phase supply
You run a home workshop with three-phase machinery, welders or compressors
Your main switch or service fuse is already near its limit at peak times
You are building, extending or adding a granny flat with its own large loads

What's included in a three-phase upgrade

We manage every step with Energex and your retailer so you only deal with one trade.

Energex application

We lodge the supply upgrade application, answer any technical questions and book the network attendance.

Consumer mains and service

New three-phase consumer mains from the point of attachment or pillar to your meter box, sized for future loads.

Three-phase switchboard

A new board with balanced circuits, RCD safety switches and surge protection, labelled for the new layout.

Meter coordination

We coordinate with your electricity retailer, who arranges the new three-phase meter through their metering provider.

How much does a three-phase upgrade cost on the Gold Coast?

A three-phase upgrade on an overhead supply starts from $3,500 and most homes land between $3,500 and $6,000. Underground supplies, long consumer mains runs and meter boxes that need replacing add to the price. Energex or your retailer may charge separately for network or metering work, and we tell you about those costs before you commit.

Our three-phase upgrade process

01

Assess and quote

We check your supply, meter box and loads, then give you a fixed written price and timeline.

02

Energex application

We lodge the application and coordinate any network work or approvals for your address.

03

Changeover day

Energex and your retailer attend while we fit the new mains and board. Power is off for most of the day.

04

Test and certify

Every circuit is tested, loads are balanced across the phases and you receive your certificate.

Standards and compliance

Three-phase upgrades are carried out by A-grade licensed electricians to AS/NZS 3000 (the Wiring Rules), AS/NZS 3008 cable sizing and the Queensland Electricity Connection and Metering Manual that Energex applies to every connection. We lodge the network application, balance loads across all three phases and issue a Certificate of Testing and Safety.

Gilston · Three-phase upgrade

“Clear about the timeline from day one.”

Told us it would take about six weeks with Energex and it did. Kept us updated by text and the new board is tidy and labelled.

Melissa J.

Hope Island · Three-phase upgrade

“Now charging at full speed.”

Upgraded to three-phase and fitted a 22 kW charger on the same visit. Josh explained what the car could actually take before we spent the money.

FAQs

Three-phase questions

What homeowners ask before upgrading their supply.

How much does three-phase power cost to install?

From $3,500 for an upgrade on an overhead supply, and from $4,800 on an underground supply. Most homes land between $3,500 and $6,000. Any network or metering charges are passed on at cost and explained before you commit.

How long does a three-phase upgrade take?

Usually four to eight weeks from the Energex application to the changeover day, depending on network work in your street. The changeover itself takes most of one day.

Do I need three-phase for an EV charger?

No. A 7 kW single-phase charger suits most drivers. Three-phase allows 11 or 22 kW charging, but many cars accept a maximum of 11 kW on AC, so check your car before upgrading.

Will three-phase lower my power bill?

Not on its own. It increases the load your home can carry and the size of solar system you can connect. Your tariff and usage decide the bill.

Does Energex need to approve it?

Yes. Every supply upgrade needs an application to Energex. We lodge it, answer any technical questions and coordinate the network attendance on changeover day.

Who arranges the new meter?

Your electricity retailer arranges the new three-phase meter through its metering provider. We coordinate the timing so the meter is ready for the changeover.
